There’s a large problem with water-resistant, shockproof all-weather cameras similar to the new Olympus mju 770 SW. On days like nowadays, when it’s torrential with rain, blow a minor strong wind and the wind-chill is cold the nether region off any nerve monkeys foolish sufficient to venture exterior, as a photographer you’ve got a ideal excuse for stay indoors with a hot cup of cocoa and relaxing in face of a blazing TV, or expenditure a few hours leveling up your Night Elf thief. Take the majority cameras absent in weather similar to this and you’ll be vocation your cover company as almost immediately as you gets back.

But by means of the 770 SW you’ve got rejection excuse at all. It shrugs off the most horrible of the British climate. Rain, sleet, snowstorm, hail and even cats and dogs are, as the saying goes, irrigate off a duck’s back. So thanks Olympus. Because of you I’m now session here drenched onto my piano, because I’ve just been out captivating sample shots with a camera that make Sir Ranulf Fiennes look like a stay-at-home wuss.

All of the Olympus mju Digital range of dense cameras has been at smallest amount durable, but the 770 SW takes it to novel heights – or should that be lowest point? It is the first digital dense camera to be waterproof to a depth of 10 meters, shockproof against waterfall from 1.5 metres, freeze-proof down to minus 10 degrees centigrade and crush-proof next to a weight of 100kg. This contentedly beats the previous record-holder, the mju 725 SW which I review in December.

While this sounds awfully imposing, it should be careful in perspective. 10 meters undersea is going beyond snorkeling and into SCUBA headfirst depths, and I believe it’s fair to say that the 770 SW, for all its tough-guy qualifications, is not actually designed to replace a good diving camera. There are purpose-built undersea cases obtainable for a number of popular dense digital cameras that are water-resistant down to 40m, and comprise things similar to flash diffusers, large buttons that can be operate while tiring gloves, and unbiased resilience so they don’t sink like a mineral if you let leave of them. The 770 SW has not any of these things. as it is ideal for water sports behavior such as sailing, jet-skiing or even surfing, and other escapade sports such as skiing or climbing, and is certainly able to stay alive in conditions that would obliterate any other camera, it does have its limits.
