Olympus Stylus 780 (mju 780 Digital)

  7.10 Megapixels

  5.00X optical zoom lens

  2.5 inch LCD

Having been quite impressed by the entry-level Olympus FE-250 last week, today I'm captivating a look at a mid-level camera from the company's best dense range, in the form of the mju 780 (known as the Stylus 780 in the US). Launched in March this year at the similar time as the E-410 and E-510 DSLRs, the mju 780 is a 7.1-megapixel pocket dense by means of a 5x zoom lens, 2.5-in monitor and automatic image stabilization. Like all the cameras in the Olympus mju variety it has a amount of water-resistance; in this case it is describe as "durable", in other words it's ok to employ it in the rain, other than you can't take it swim. Or rather, you can obtain it swimming; however you don't imagine it to work afterwards.

It's a strongly built camera, with a physically powerful all-steel body that looks like it might survive a a small number of knocks. Despite this it is comparatively slim and frivolous, measuring 99.6 x 55.1 x 24 mm and weigh 125g minus battery and certificate. That's a pretty imposing requirement, especially bearing in mind the current retail cost of under £170. compare to other best compacts it looks similar to a good deal. The Canon IXUS 75 is around £160, other than it only have a 3x zoom and isn't durable. The same can be said of the Nikon CoolPIx S500, which costs around £150. The beautiful standard IXUS 850 IS has a 3.8x wide-zoom, but it too isn't durable and costs £235. The Casio EX-V7 is about £160, and has a 7x zoom lens, but it's not durable either. In fact the only other choice for weatherproof cameras are also other models from the mju range, the permanent but luxurious Ricoh Caplio 500G Wide (£340) or the Pentax Optio W30 (£160), although both of these camera only have a 3x go fast lens.

In malice of its tank-like building, the mju 780 is a chiefly sleek and fashionable camera. The body has a bent wedge-like shape, thicker on the correct where the controls are. The camera is obtainable in either black or in the flat brushed-steel come to an end of my appraisal sample, which resists finger-marks and scratches and determination wait looking high-quality for a long time. The 780 is a comparatively long camera for its tallness, and the extra length provide abundance of room on the rear for the excellent 2.5-in 230k wide-view monitor, and for the striking control layout. The big rectangular buttons and D-pad have illuminated writing making the camera simple to operate in the dark.
